Reefing
Even if the forecast looks fabulous it is normal practice to thread both reefs in the main as to be honest you never know what’s around the corner. A few years ago we started a race on our J24 in a force 1, then came fog and finally a force 6 bundled against the tide to deliver huge seas, none of which was forecast (13 knots of boatspeed on the way home with just the jib up).
Rubbish
A carrier bag is hung in the galley area and all our rubbish goes in here rather than over the side (and that includes banana skins which take years to degrade in the the water). If this 'gash bag' seems full and heavy before we go, then get it off the boat and into one of the green bins outside the Southwick clubhouse - I love people who think about saving weight.
